Materials needed for ultrasuper-critical power plants. (Materials Science/R&D).

A program in which several government and commercial entities will collaborate to develop and prove new materials for more efficient, high-temperature coal-fired power generation plants has been announced the National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL)of the U.S. Dept. of Energy. The goal is to develop materials that can withstand boiler temperatures up to 760[degrees]C (1400[degrees]F) Higher boiler steam temperatures will enable efficiency to rise from 35% to more than 50%, and should result in reduction of emissions by nearly 40%.
