A hybrid stainless steel assembly (HSSA) consisting of thin stainless steel sheets laminated over a core of stainless steel fibers has reportedly been patented by Volvo Technological Development Corp., Goteborg, Sweden. The face sheets range in thickness from 50 to 200 microns, with core material of stainless steel fibers oriented approximately perpendicular to the plane of the sheet.

Fiber diameters range from 8 to 35 microns and lengths are about one millimeter. The fibers occupy about 8% of the volume of the core. The fibers in the core are produced by a wire drawing process, ...
