A micro heat pipe that wicks away heat from chips in laptop computers has reportedly been developed at Sandia National Laboratories, Albuquerque, N.M. The heat pipes are actually 60-micron deep channels etched along a thin plate of copper. Each heat source has its own channel, which leads to the edge of the computer.
Several plates are stacked, and a ring of copper separates the layers. This reduces weight considerably compared to the piece of solid copper that currently acts as a heat sink in laptop computers. In the heatpipe loop, heat changes ...
