March 1963: Strange as it seems, events in outer space may influence the handling of an article scheduled for Metal Progress. A case in point is a story on AT&T's communications satellite -- "Materials and Processing Methods Used in the Telstar." At the time we contacted Bell Laboratories, the satellite was operating satisfactorily with no hint of trouble.

... However, while we were in the preliminary process of reviewing the manuscript, Telstar suddenly went dead. This necessitated changing the article; but as the editors were modifying their story, around Christmas ...
