Thermal stir welding merges fusion, friction stir welding. (Welding/Joining).

A joining technology that is said to improve upon fusion welding and friction stir welding by merging the two processes has been developed by NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center, Huntsville, Ala. The technology enables welding of dissimilar materials at high rates. Thermal stir welding reportedly addresses shortcomings in fusion welding and friction stir welding.
