Harder and tougher nano-crystalline chromium nitride coatings said to have superior adhesion have been announced by Phygen Inc., Minneapolis, Minn. Called ST.3 (Super Tough, variation 3), the thin-film chromium nitride coatings are applied by a proprietary PVD process. Because the coatings are so thin, they do not affect critical dimensions of properly heat treated tools or precise machine components.
