A process in which mineral ores are treated with microwaves to weaken the rock and reduce energy requirements during grinding has been announced by the University of Nottingham, England. Research has focused on the principle that rocks are made of many different minerals, some of which heat rapidly and expand when subjected to microwaves, while others do not heat or expand at all.
