Near-infrared absorbing plastics enable laser welding. (Materials Progress: Welding/Joining).
Advanced Materials & Processes, July, 2003
Near-infrared absorbing plastic materials that convert laser energy into heat are available from Gentex Corp., Carbondale, Pa. A thin layer of these materials applied at the interface of two pieces of plastic to be joined, absorbs the infrared light, acting as a focal point for the laser. Localized heating produces an instant weld with no material deformation, making it ideal for applications ranging from microfluidics to electronic packaging components.
