Copper spinodal alloy ends seizing in bushings.(Metals)

A spinodal alloy of copper, nickel, and tin has replaced steel in bushings for dynamic pins in continuous mining machines, reports Brush Wellman Engineered Materials, Cleveland, Ohio. Called ToughMet, the alloy is said to have the strength of steel and the low friction and lubricity of leaded bronze.

The specific alloy is ToughMet 3 CX 105, a cast copper alloy with 15% nickel and 8% tin, with yield strength of 724 MPa (105 ksi). The mating component is a carburized steel pin. Underground mining is one of the most demanding applications for bearings. ...
