Thermal barrier coatings insulate jet-engine parts.(Surface Engineering)
Advanced Materials & Processes, August, 2003
Thermal barrier coatings (TBC) that have both initial and post-exposure thermal conductivity lower than those of yttria-stabilized zirconia (Zr[O.sub.2] and [Y.sub.2] [O.sub.3]) have been reported by NASA Glenn Research Center, Cleveland, Ohio. The new TBC's are a modified version of yttria-stabilized zirconia, in which other oxides are added to impart lower thermal conductivity.
