A carbon fiber heart valve with improved biocompatibility has been announced by MedicalCV Inc., Inver Grove Heights, Minn. The Omnicarbon heart valve is comprised of three components: housing, disk, and sewing ring. This valve is unique in that it is the only monoleaflet valve (a valve with a single hingeless pivoting disk) to utilize pyrolytic carbon in both its housing and disk, for improved biocompatibility.
