These parts of hip, knee, and shoulder implants are made by Zimmer. Warsaw. Ind., of compression-molded ultra-high molecular-weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) and the titanium alloy Ti-6Al-4V. The titanium is coated with Trabecular Metal, a porous elemental tantalum called Hedrocel that was developed by Implex, Allendale, N.J.
