Lightweight materials are being considered by the military because the U.S. Army has about 250,000 trucks and 110,000 trailers in service at any given time. Although lightweight materials may raise the initial price of military vehicles, they have the potential to cut overall costs because of reduced fuel consumption, less maintenance, and lower costs for operations and support.
