Ceramic pin tool material enables FSW of superalloys.(Welding/Joining)
Advanced Materials & Processes, December, 2003
Recent developments in ceramic pin tool materials for friction stir welding (FSW) have demonstrated tool life in excess of 80 m (260 feet) in A36 steel by researchers at Megastir Technologies, West Bountiful, Utah, and Brigham Young University, Provo, Utah. The polycrystalline boron nitride (PCBN) tool provides the thermal stability, hardness, and strength necessary for FSW of materials with high melting points.
