Zirconia stabilized with both scandia and yttria may be a superior thermal barrier coating material at temperatures that cause deterioration of zirconia stabilized with yttria alone, report researchers at NASA Glenn Research Center, Cleveland, Ohio. A range of compositions in the zirconia/scandia/yttria system has higher resistance to deleterious phase transformations at temperatures that cause deterioration of yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ).
