A new corrosion testing service in which corrosion-causing microorganisms typically found in natural gas pipelines are identified and quantified is now available from the Gas Technology Institute (GTI), Des Plaines, Ill. Microbiologically influenced corrosion (MIC), a significant component in pipeline corrosion, costs the industry an estimated $2 billion a year, according to a study by CC Technologies and NACE International.
