The world's tallest free-standing cast iron sculpture of Vulcan, the Roman god of the forge, dominates the top of Red Mountain in Vulcan Park, Birmingham, Ala. The 17 m (56 ft) tall, 45 metric ton (50 ton) giant was created by Italian-born sculpture Giuseppe Moretti for display at the 1904 St. Louis, Mo., World's Fair, where it won the grand prize in the Mine & Metallurgy exhibit.
