Aluminum composite track is tough enough for combat tank.(Metals)

An aluminum matrix composite reinforced with ceramic whiskers has been developed for tracks in U.S. Army combat vehicles by Surmet Ceramics Corp., Buffalo, N.Y. The material properties approach those of steel, but can reduce the weight by as much as one ton per vehicle. The company is to design, develop, and test a lightweight composite track for a 25-ton combat vehicle.
