Friction stir welding joins auto aluminum components.(Welding/Joining)

Friction stir welding (FSW) has been optimized to assemble aluminum extrusions for automotive components, according to a paper presented at the 2004 SAE World Congress in March. Titled "Friction Stir Welding of Extruded Aluminum for Automotive Applications" (SAE paper 2004-01-1333), the paper was prepared by Arthur Scafe of Tower Automotive and Armondo Joaquin of the Ford Motor Company.
