High-yield process reduces cost of gradient-index lenses.(Forming/Processing)

A high-yield process that reduces the cost of gradient-index lenses by 80% has reportedly been developed by BeamTek Inc., Tucson, Ariz., with funding from the U.S. Missile Defense Agency. To make the lenses, a glass rod and tube are fused together to build a preform, which is then diffused to make a gradient index profile.
