Welding methods bond Nitinol to stainless steel for implants.(Welding/Joining)

A technique for welding Nitinol nickel-titanium shape-memory alloy to stainless steel for medical devices is under development at the Edison Welding Institute, Columbus, Ohio. EWI's approach is aimed at overcoming some of the known difficulties, such as the formation of brittle intermetallic phases usually found in Nitinol-stainless steel fusion welds.
