An adaptable, adjustable pin tool that expands the capabilities of the bobbin tool developed for friction stir welding (FSW) by TWI, Cambridge, England, has reportedly been invented at MTS Systems Corp., Eden Prairie, Minn. Called AdAPT, for Adaptable, Adjustable Pin Tool, the tool allows three types of FSW: fixed pin, adjustable pin, and self-reacting pin.
The head provides many advantages over standard fixed-pin welding heads. It provides the ability to weld tapered shapes, and eliminates the pullout dimple by slowly retracting the pin at the end of the weld. The self-reacting ...
