Throughout the 1970's and 1980's, applications for Shape Memory Alloys (SMA's), and particularly nickel-titanium (Nitinol), grew rapidly both in number and value. Interest in these fascinating materials had been growing strongly in the academic community since the early 1960's, but the first conference addressing the commercial aspects of SMA's was not held until 1988 at Michigan State University in Lansing, Michigan.
