A scratch-resistant coating that is said to be 100 times better than ordinary coatings on compact disks and digital video disks has been developed by TDK Corp., Japan. Called Armor Plated, the coating consists of two layers of fluorine-base resins containing silica particles 50 microns in diameter.
The top layer also contains a curing agent called acetophenone, which enables the coating to be cured by ultraviolet light. The coatings are applied to the surface by spin coating, a process that is easily automated. The silica particles provide the hardness that prevents scratching, ...
