Smith & Nephew implant system combines zirconium knee, Accuris.(SMST SOCIETY)

Smith & Nephew Inc., Orthopaedic Division, a subsidiary of Smith & Nephew plc, announces a unicondylar knee system that combines two proprietary technologies: the Accuris instrumentation system and a new knee implant made from Oxinium brand oxidized zirconium. Oxidized zirconium, the material from which Oxinium implants are made, has been shown in tests to be 160 times smoother and 4900 times more abrasion-resistant than cobalt chromium, the metal in traditional "uni knee" replacements.
In addition, the knee's Genesis design has been shown to achieve a 93% survival rate ten years after surgery when made of the traditional cobalt-chromium version. The proprietary Accuris instrument system is orthopaedic medicine's only uni knee instrument set to use...
