One way of producing lightweight, strong components close to their final shape is to fill hollow steel bodies with compacted semi-finished material consisting of metal powders mixed with small quantities of sponging agents, reports the Metal Foam Center of the Fraunhofer Research Institute, Germany.

When heated, hydrides in the powders produce hydrogen, carbonates, and carbon dioxide, which result in gas bubbles in the metal. The effect is to reduce weight while maintaining a high level of tensile and fracture strength. The goal of ongoing research is to find the right balance ...
