Sharks inspire coatings to protect hulls of ocean ships.(SURFACE ENGINEERING)

An environmentally friendly coating based on shark skin has reportedly been developed for ship hulls by Prof. Anthony Brennan at the University of Florida, Gainesville. UF materials engineers analyzed elements of unique shark scales to design the new coating, which prevents the growth of a notoriously aggressive marine algae and may also impede barnacles, according to preliminary tests.
