TPU ski boots have high impact strength, resist tears.(POLYMERS/CERAMICS)

Advanced Materials & Processes, July, 2005

Transparent aromatic grades of the TPU Desmopan from Bayer MaterialScience, Pitsburgh, Pa., are becoming increasingly popular as a material for ski boots. The material is used to manufacture the injection-molded shell and upper. The transparent Desmopan grades are based on polyethers and are available in hardness of 52 to 65 Shore D.

Ski boots made of this material display excellent color brilliance and exhibit no clouding even at wall thicknesses of up to six millimeters. They have good low-temperature impact strength and outstanding flexibility at low temperatures, as well as high resistance to abrasion and tearing. The upper and shell are therefore not susceptible to scratches, nor are they easily damaged, as when impacted by sharp ski poles. [ILLUSTRATION...
