In April 1997, an FDA Investigational Device Exemption (IDE) study was begun to determine the effectiveness of the Lineage ceramic-on-ceramic hip system from Wright Medical Technology, Arlington, Tenn. By November 2003, nearly 1700 implants were in place, making it the largest regulated study ever on a total hip replacement device.
