The thing about steel is, it's not nanotech. It's not one of the buzzwords that is most likely to pry big bucks out of the federal government for expensive research programs. Fortunately though, the steel industry is on an upturn, and most manufacturers are doing rather well. Also fortunately, the industry recognizes that if prosperity is to continue, smart and dedicated people must be attracted to the field of materials science in general, and ferrous metallurgy in particular.
