Reduced pressure electron beam welding (RPEBW) for waste-package final closure welds at the proposed nuclear waste repository at Yucca Mountain in Nevada, is to be explored in a contract awarded to TWI, England, working with its U.S. partner, United Defense L.P., Arlington, Va. The current waste package design for the proposed repository includes gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW) in fabricating the waste packages.
