Ultalite aluminum metal-matrix composites are a combination of aluminum-silicon casting alloys and spherical ceramic reinforcing particles. The ceramic particles are derived from fly ash, a byproduct of the burning of black coal in power stations, and therefore are very low in cost. Fly ash is made up of tiny glass spheres, and consists primarily of silicon, aluminum, iron, and calcium oxides.
