Titanium has been associated with high technology since its emergence as a strategic material for both commercial and military aerospace structures in the 1950s. The titanium industry has long suffered growing pains due to reliance on these cyclical markets, and has not been immune to the view that the metals industry is under competitive threat from new materials and technologies such as composites and ceramics.
