At two-thirds the weight of aluminum, magnesium is the lightest structural metal and is almost infinitely abundant in sea water and in dolomite rock. However, it has not been applied as widely as might be expected, because alloys have historically been susceptible to poor corrosion performance, as well as to the misconception that magnesium will burst into flame if struck by sunshine.
