A project that addresses the welding behavior and weldability of single crystal, nickel-base superalloys to develop a methodology for weld repair of critical components in advanced gas turbine systems is underway at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Oak Ridge, Tenn. The high cost of single crystal castings in jet engines and in large land-based gas turbine engines makes it imperative to improve casting yields and to be able to refurbish worn or failed components after service.
