A tool for depositing thin-film coatings of superconductors onto kilometer-scale lengths of flexible metal tapes has reportedly been developed by Structured Material Industries Inc., Piscataway, N.J., with funding from the Ballistic Missile Defense Agency. The tool eventually will produce high-critical-temperature superconducting tape more than a kilometer long.
