The weight of today's automobiles could be cut by 60% if half of the ferrous metals were replaced by carbon fiber composites, according to Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Oak Ridge, Tenn. In addition, fuel consumption could be reduced by 30%, while maintaining safety. Oak Ridge is working as part of a consortium with Ford, General Motors, and DaimlerChrysler to develop an efficient carbon fiber oxidation process to reduce production costs.
