That the Earth's meridians are not all exactly the same length? This was discovered after the French Academy of Sciences defined the length of the meter in 1790 as "one ten-millionth of a quarter-meridian." According to an article in MIT's Technology Review (May 2005), two French astronomers spent seven years measuring the precise distance between Dunkirk in France and Barcelona in Spain.
