Orbital weld head enhances friction stir welding of pipes.(PROCESS TECHNOLOGY)

Jeffrey Ding of NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center was one of the Emhart "Create the Future" Design Contest entrants recently awarded second prize for his design of an orbital weld head for friction stir welding of pipes. The weld head holds the two pipe ends together and provides back-side weld support as it makes a friction stir weld around the circumference of the joined ends.
