London Materials Congress 2006: biomaterials to batteries and beer cans; The biennial Materials Congress of the Institute of Materials, Minerals, and Mining was presented April 5-7 in central London. In three full days about 240 papers and 100 posters were presented; the program was divided into 20 symposia, six plenary lectures, and two "master-classes" or workshops.

Topics at the London Materials Congress ranged from biomaterials for regenerative medicine, through diamond materials science and applications, to innovations in steel and other structural materials. As seven or eight sessions were presented concurrently, this report will concentrate mainly on two aspects: ** Disruptive technologies in light metals, and ** Energy materials for fuel cells and batteries.
