Producers, users, and importers of nickel are launching the Nickel Consortium, to efficiently meet all the requirements of Europe's new chemicals policy: Registration, Evaluation and Authorisation of CHemicals--REACH. The European Union, the largest user of nickel in the world, utilizes about 700,000 metric tons of nickel per year, about two-thirds in the form of stainless steel.
