A rapid heating technology that enables precise control of the diffusion of atoms and the merging of nanoparticles in thin films and nanoparticle systems has reportedly been developed by researchers at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Oak Ridge, Tenn. Called pulsed thermal processing (PTP), the technology enables control of electrical, optical, and magnetic properties.

The technology is enabled by a Mattson Technologies light, a high-density plasma arc lamp that provides "white light" nearly matching the sun's spectrum, including infrared, visible, and ultraviolet light. ...
