Rare earth fiber lasers act as machine cutting tools.(PROCESS TECHNOLOGY)(Brief article)
Advanced Materials & Processes, May, 2007
Fiber lasers doped with low levels of a rare earth element such as ytterbium are completely solid state, very compact, and significantly smaller than the equivalent C[O.sub.2] gas lasers, says TWI, Cambridge, England. The lasers are four times more energy efficient than current C[O.sub.2] lasers.
The laser diodes have projected lifetimes of about 100,000 hours and require essentially no maintenance. These advantages have particular significance when a laser is incorporated into a machine tooling operation. The cutting speeds available on thin materials are high, with cuts made in 0.8 mm thick steel at speeds of almost 60 meters per minute. It has also been shown that stainless steel and aluminum can also be cut effectively with the fiber laser. With more...
