The March 2007 joint meeting of the ASM Albuquerque Chapter and the New Mexico Section of the American Welding Society (AWS) featured Dr. Stephen W. Banovic, materials research engineer, Materials Science & Engineering Laboratory, National Institute of Standards & Technology (NIST), Gaithersburg, Md.
More than 80 people attended the meeting. [ILLUSTRATION OMITTED] Dr. Banovic spoke on "A Metallurgist's Role in the Federal Building and Fire Safety Investigation of the World Trade Center Disaster." His overview described the chemistry, microstructure, and mechanical properties of 12 types of steel recovered from critical areas of the Twin Towers, many of which had received direct impact and fire damage.
