Ceragenin, a new class of compounds known as cationic steroid antimicrobials (CSAs), has been designed for implantable medical devices by Ceragenix Pharmaceuticals, Denver, Colo. The company cited a 21-day study showing that an untreated control catheter had 30,000 bacterial colony forming units (CFUs) on its surface, while treated catheters had fewer than 100 CFUs.
