The Tech Note in the March 2007 issue was based on information from the ASM Handbook Volume 4 Heat Treating, in the Vacuum Furnaces section. However, since that book was published, several improvements in operating a vacuum furnace in partial pressure have been made. Specifically, backfill and the operating pressure level needed to prevent or minimize evaporation of the substrate have changed.
