Miniature robot navigates surface of beating heart.(UNIVERSITY RESEARCH)
Advanced Materials & Processes, July, 2007
A miniature mobile robot that facilitates minimally invasive beating-heart intrapericardial therapies is under development at Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh, Pa. The HeartLander enters the chest through an incision below the sternum, and adheres to the epicardial surface of the heart.
It navigates to any location on the epicardium, and administers therapy under control of the physician. In the current HeartLander prototype, suction maintains prehension of the epicardial surface, and wire actuation from offboard motors enables locomotion. Magnetic tracking and fluoroscopy provide feedback to the physician, who controls the device through a joystick interface.
