A LENGTHY FEATURE ON Guitar Center in the July issue of Business 2.0 offered an inside look into the workings of the industry's largest retailer. From compensating salespeople to motivating store managers, author Paul Sloan provided a sharply focused portrait of the fast growing business. To spur managers to instill core values and proper sales techniques in the floor staff, Sloan reported on the "phone shopping" segment that is held away from the manager's site three times a year "A woman in a tight skirt (recruited from Guitar Center's ranks) stands onstage and spins a container filled with ping-pong balls, each marked with a store's number.
The "lucky" manager is summoned to the stage and an exec dials the store--first to see if the sales staff picks up...
