The older isogrid structural system is an integrally stiffened membrane developed by NASA contractors over three decades ago. This precursor or related technology was described in the Isogrid Design Handbook from McDonnell Douglas Aeronautics Company in September 1975. This structural form has since been successfully utilized in a variety of weight-critical applications, such as launch vehicle interstage structures.
