Even though Zoltek Companies, Inc. shows a dramatic financial loss in its 2000 annual report, just out, it may well be that the pieces now in place for carbon fiber growth are strategically positioning the company to be a major player in many new, emerging applications for carbon fibers and be an ultimate winner.
Zoltek philosophically believes that it has the advantages of being the "first mover" (and unfortunately also gets the disadvantages, such as application capture later than estimated) with its capacity adds ahead of demand and extensive market development commitments.
Five years ago, the company predicted a revolution in materials with the planned emergence of its low-cost,high-performance carbon fibers. As they now point out in the 2000...
